A 10-year-old girl has been raped in Afghanistan�s northern Jowzjan province, an official said Sunday.

The girl faced sexual assault in Dasht-i-Laili area of the province on Saturday evening before she was admitted to hospital, the provincial public health director told.

The victim initially said that the assault happened by her step brother but later refused to accuse him after probably being threatened by her step mother and other relatives, according to the official.

Mohammad Raza Ghafoori, a spokesman for provincial governor, also confirmed the incident adding the rape happened by an unknown individual.

This comes as police arrested two people over alleged rape of a child in Kunduz province on Saturday.
